'You are braver than you know,' Mordecai always told her. Esther just smiled. How could a quiet girl from Susa ever be brave?
Esther had no mother and no father. But she had Mordecai, who had raised her like his very own — and that was everything.
Esther loved her people. And she kept one quiet secret: she was one of God's people, the Jews.
One day big news rang through Susa. The mighty king was looking for a new queen — and his messengers were searching the whole land!
Soon the king's men came — and they chose Esther! Her heart pounded. 'Don't be afraid,' Mordecai whispered. 'God is with you.'
So Esther went up to the palace — bigger and grander than anything she had ever seen.
Marble shone. Gold sparkled. Esther had never felt so small. But she remembered Mordecai's words and stood up tall.
Gentle maids helped her get ready. Everyone liked kind Esther right away.

Every day, Mordecai waited near the gate, watching over her. 'Keep your secret a little longer,' he had told her — and Esther did.
At last Esther stood before the king. Her kind, calm face made him smile. Of all the young women, the king loved Esther the most.
He placed a golden crown upon her head. 'You will be my queen,' he said. Esther — the orphan girl from Susa — was now a QUEEN!
Queen Esther wore a crown now. But in her heart she was still the same kind girl — and she still kept her quiet secret.
Now the king had a chief helper named Haman. The king made him powerful — and Haman lifted his chin a little higher every day.
Wherever Haman walked, the king's rule was that EVERYONE must bow. And everyone did. Everyone… except one man.

Mordecai stood tall. 'I bow only to God,' he said quietly. He would not bow to proud Haman.
Haman's face went red and hot. How DARE this man not bow to HIM! His glare locked on Mordecai and would not let go.
But hurting one man was not enough for Haman. He made a wicked plan — to harm ALL of Mordecai's people, everywhere in the land.
'There are people who don't obey you,' Haman lied. 'Make a law against them.' He never said WHO — or that the queen was one of them.
The king trusted Haman. He sealed the new law with his own ring. CLICK. He did not know what a terrible thing he had just done.
The dreadful law spread across the land. Esther's people were in terrible danger. Everywhere, they wept and prayed.
Mordecai's heart broke. He thought and thought. There was only one person in the whole kingdom who might help — Esther.

Mordecai sent word to the palace. When Esther read it, her hands began to shake.
'Haman has tricked the king,' Mordecai's message said. 'You must beg the king to save our people. Maybe God made you queen for such a time as this.'
But there was a scary rule. No one — not even the queen — could go to the king unless he called for them. Anyone who did could be sent away forever.
There was only one hope. If the king held out his golden scepter, you were safe. If he did not… Esther swallowed hard.
Esther took a deep breath. 'If I must go, I will go,' she said. 'And if I am lost, then I am lost. But I will try to save my people.'
'Tell all my people,' said Esther. 'Pray and don't eat for three days. Pray for me — and I will pray too.'
All across the city, God's people knelt and prayed. For three whole days, they asked God to make Esther brave.

And Esther prayed too. 'Help me, God. Make me brave. Be with me when I walk into that great hall.'
On the third day, Esther dressed in her royal robes. She lifted her chin. 'It is time.'
Esther stepped into the great hall. The long red carpet stretched far, far ahead. Her hands felt cold, but step by step she walked toward the king.
The king looked up. There stood Esther — who had not been called! For one long, scary moment, no one breathed.
Then the king smiled — and held out his golden scepter! Esther was safe! God had heard their prayers.
Gently, Esther reached out and touched the tip of the scepter. She let out a long, slow breath.
'What do you wish, my queen? Even half my kingdom!' Esther smiled. 'Come to a feast I have made — and bring Haman.'

That night they feasted. Esther's heart was not quite ready to speak. 'Come again tomorrow,' she said sweetly, 'to one more feast.'
Haman left the feast puffed up with pride. 'The queen invites only ME to her feasts! I am the greatest man in the land!' He had no idea what was coming.
The next night, the king asked again. 'Now, Queen Esther — what do you truly wish?' Esther steadied herself. The time had come.
'O King,' said Esther, 'someone has made a law to harm my people. And… I am one of them. Please, save my people — and save me!'
The king jumped up. 'WHO?' he thundered. 'Who would dare hurt my queen and her people?'
Esther pointed. 'It was this man — Haman!' Haman shrank back, trembling, his sneer gone.

Guards marched proud Haman far away, never to trouble anyone again. His wicked plan was over.
Then the king made a brand-new law — one that kept Esther's people safe. He gave them his royal protection across all the land.
And good Mordecai — who had always done what was right — was given a robe of honor and stood beside the king himself.
All across the land, God's people sang and danced. They were safe! What a day of joy it was!
'I always knew it,' Mordecai said. 'You were braver than you knew.' Esther smiled — God had been with her all along.
A kind orphan girl had saved a whole people — just by being brave when it mattered most. For maybe, just maybe, that was why God had brought her there… for such a time as this.
